SUMMARY:Webinar: Supporting Young Women to Thrive
DESCRIPTION:Women in Focus Webinar Series\nWebinar 1: Supporting Young Women to Thrive\nFor many young women in WA\, life circumstances such as poverty\, trauma\, lack of services or unmet needs\, lead to poor social\, economic and health outcomes. These outcomes can have far reaching impacts and may lead to entrenched disadvantage. \nThe community service sector play a significant role in developing positive social determinants that enable young women and act as protective factors against the ongoing impacts of social and public health issues\, such as gender-based violence\, racism\, discrimination\, inequality\, poverty and social exclusion. Importantly\, these protective factors also support young women to live empowered\, happy\, safe\, and secure lives. \nThis webinar provides a space to discuss how we enhance work to support and enable young women in WA\, through investment in positive social determinants that support positive life outcomes. During the webinar you will hear from three innovative programs working with young women\, including: \n\nBrave Foundation – an Australian not-for-profit that equips expecting and parenting young people with resources\, referral\, and education opportunities to facilitate happy\, healthy\, and skilled families over time.\nShooting Stars – an initiative of Glass Jar Australia which empowers Aboriginal girls and women across Western and South Australia to make informed choices about their education and employment journey\, helping them shoot for the stars.\nSexual Health Quarters – The HERS Project – (Hura\, Empowered\, Resilient\, Sisters) program is a peer-education program for young women aged 16-29 years from migrant and refugee backgrounds\, that builds knowledge\, confidence and skills in sexual rights\, consent and respectful relationships\, and sexual health.\n\nA representative from each program will provide an overview of their work and share learnings about supporting young women to build supportive and nurturing environments. Representatives will then join a panel discussion based on the question: How can the community service sector support young women through investment in positive social determinants that prevent poor social\, economic and health outcomes\, and promote positive ones?  Webinar attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions and join the discussion. \nThis webinar will be hosted by Alison Evans\, CEO of the Centre for Women’s Safety and Wellbeing.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Emerging Issues 2023
DESCRIPTION:Our conversation will focus on groups excluded from the workforce\, the current workforce challenges facing the community sector and burnout within the workforce. \nWe will hear the lived experiences of people who are feeling the impact of a growing swell of political extremism\, and the impact that has on the day-to-day lives of ordinary Australians\, and the wider impact on our political landscape. \nWe will also continue the discussion on working together in transitioning services to ACCOs. \nMore specifically\, Emerging Issues Forum will focus on the following key issues: \nMoving to Aboriginal Service Delivery\nFollowing a successful Day 3 at our Conference in May\, we will focus on how we can work in partnership in moving to ACCO service delivery. This is a significant conversation to have\, in light of the Referendum that will be held this year\, and the positive impact it can have in the lives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. \nWith guest speakers: \n\nJenny Sala\, Executive Manager of Business Development\, Aboriginal Health Council of Western Australia\nKlaudia Shenton\, Policy and Strategy Manager\, Aboriginal Health Council of Western Australia\nCheryl Smith\, Assistant Director General of Aboriginal Outcomes at the Department of Communities WA\n\nLabour market and workforce trends\, challenges and opportunities: Supporting workers facing disadvantage and building community sector capacity\nUnemployment is at historically low levels and community sector organisations face particular difficulties in recruiting staff\, notably in regional areas. At the same time there are many groups in the community who face barriers to work. This presentation considers current and future labour market and workforce trends and issues\, focusing especially on addressing barriers for people who are excluded from jobs. \nWith guest speaker Dr Fiona Macdonald\, Policy Director\, Industrial and Social\, Centre for Future Work \nCollaboration: How does working together affect workforce wellbeing\nWe know collaboration helps social services address the complex needs they see in their clients\, but could it also be the key to looking after the people delivering these services? This session will share the findings of Health Justice Australia’s involvement in the Global Burnout Survey and explore their implications for the design and delivery of services that look after their workforce as well as the communities they support. \nWith guest speaker Dr Tessa Boyd-Cain\, Founding CEO\, Health Justice Australia \nLived experience of a politically extremist world from the Trans perspective\nIn 2023\, political extremism is becoming more and more an issue in Australian society. The rise of hate speech and bigotry is affecting Western Australians and changing our political landscape. \nWith guest speakers Dylan Green\, Lived Experience Advocate \nDylan Green is a WACOSS employee and a passionate advocate for the LGBTQIA+ community. Dylan is a transman raised in Perth who has presented on a number of panels for various organisations and Government Departments and has represented the trans community on consumer reference groups for the WA State Government. \nThe extremist landscape in 2023 – emerging challenges and considerations\nThis brief will outline three emerging and intensifying trends relating to issues of extremism within contemporary Australian society impacting social cohesion and safety for minority groups: the increasing impact of transnational networks; ‘Salad Bar’ ideology; and the growing role of influencer ecosystems. \nWith special guest speaker Dr Ben Rich\, Co-director\, Curtain Extremism Research Network (CERN)\, Senior Lecturer\, International Relations and History\, Curtin University \n  \nPlease note\, this webinar will be recorded.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Communities will have conflict. How can we lessen the pain?
DESCRIPTION:Navigating disruption\, crisis\, and conflict are normal challenges in community organisations. Things go awry\, from time to time\, with people\, relationships\, and whole group dynamics. It doesn’t make it any easier or less painful\, however\, to know you are not the first person or organisation to come across a difficult individual or experience a schism. \nMegan and Kath have both researched these hard to manage—and hard on people—conflict situations\, which may include rifts between factions in an organisation; exclusion\, bullying and incivility; “sticky situations” with volunteers; power plays; or perceived threats to an organisation’s identity or future existence. \nThis webinar will be a chance to be introduced to their research\, ask questions\, and perhaps reframe a seemingly stuck situation—from the present or the past—or to strengthen your organisation’s capacity to manage the inevitable incidence of conflict in the future. \nThis webinar will be hosted by Dr Megan Paull and Dr Katherine Sugars from Murdoch University. \n

SUMMARY:Community Services Excellence Awards
DESCRIPTION:Take me now to register for the Community Services Excellence Awards. \n\nCommunity service organisations are the heartbeat of our communities. Every day\, hundreds of determined staff and volunteers work to assist Western Australians who experience disadvantage and adversity.\n\nMost of these staff and volunteers expect little in return for their hard work\, whether they are making positive change for children\, young people\, families\, or entire communities.\n\nA partnership between the Western Australian Government\, through the Department of Communities\, and WACOSS\, the partnership’s success is due to the commitment of collaboration between the State Government and the community services sector.\n\nThe Community Services Excellence Awards are a celebration of WA’s unsung heroes and the organisations they work for.\n\nNominations for the awards open Thursday 1 December 2022.\n\nThe Community Service Excellence Awards coincide with the biennial WACOSS Conference.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Applying for funding to reduce disaster risk and prepare for disasters in Western Australia
DESCRIPTION:We are excited to host this webinar\, in partnership with the State Emergency Management Committee and the National Emergency Management Agency\, to provide an overview of the National Disaster Risk Reduction Program and the Disaster Ready Australia Fund. \nThis webinar will help give an understanding of both programs and encourage applications from the WA Community Service Organisations and Local Governments. \nBoth agencies will discuss program eligibility and provide the opportunity for the sector to ask questions. The webinar will include a short presentation from recently successful NDRR application from the community sector. \nJoining the webinar will be Disaster Risk Reduction and Disability Advocate\, Clare Gibellini\, who will provide a short presentation on emergency management planning and disability inclusion. \nDisaster Ready Fund (DRF)\nThe Australian Government has established the Disaster Ready Fund (DRF) to provide up to $200 million per financial year\, over five years from 1 July 2023 ($1 billion in total). \nIt will fund projects that build resilience to\, prepare for\, or reduce the risk of\, future natural hazard impacts\, and help to build the long-term sustainability of communities at risk of being affected by future disasters. \nDFES is the applicant and lead agency for WA and it is expected that they will consult widely with community groups and local governments in developing applications. \nThe categories of eligible project activity types are Stream One: infrastructure and Stream Two: systemic risk reduction. \nNational Disaster Risk Reduction\nThe National Disaster Risk Reduction (NDRR) grant program will make about $2.5 million available in 2023 for projects that reduce disaster risk in Western Australia. Projects must contribute to achieving the objectives of the National Disaster Risk Reduction Framework (NDRRF) and the WA Implementation Plan for the NDRRF by reducing risks associated with at least one natural hazard. To be eligible\, projects must reduce disaster risk and improve community resilience\, rather than contributing to disaster relief\, response or recovery activities. \nOrganisation that are eligible to apply for NDRR grants are: \n\nLocal governments\nState government agencies\nGovernment trading entities\nIncorporated organisations\nNot-for-profit organisations.\n\nWebinar Details\nDate: Wednesday 8 March 2023\nTime: 10:00am – 11:30am \nThis webinar will be held online via Zoom. A link to access the webinar will be sent out the day prior to the event.

SUMMARY:Emerging Issues Forum 2022
DESCRIPTION:It’s now been two years since COVID-19 first appeared and radically changed the ways in which we all we work and live. Being just months away from the first Federal Election since the pandemic began\, these two topics – the 2022 Federal Election alongside COVID-19 and its long-term impacts – are the two most current and relevant trends affecting the community services sector. \nStepping away from the dominant issues making the headlines at the moment\, this year’s forum will also include an important discussion on heatwaves after a summer that saw heat records tumble in WA\, and youth justice\, an issue that has made national news over the last twelve months. Both of these issues will have a focus on lived experience. \nThis year’s Emerging Issues Forum will focus on the following key issues with speakers to be confirmed closer to the date: \n\nThe Long-term impacts of COVID-19 – We are all going to have to learn to live and work with COVID-19 over the coming years; join us for a discussion on the implications of that reality.\nThe 2022 Federal Election – Mostly likely to be held in May\, the Emerging Issues Forum is the perfect opportunity to discuss the election agenda of relevance to the sector\, to look at offerings of the various major and minor parties\, as well as independents. We will also look at some likely election outcome scenarios to consider who makes up the government and who may be key points for influence\, what policies might be up for reform\, and what approach should we take in our advocacy post-election.\nHeatwaves – This summer WA has experienced the highest number of days over 40 degrees and the most consecutive days over 35 degrees in recorded history\, this will have an enormous impact on the health and wellbeing of all Western Australians and particularly impact on energy bills for low and middle income households. How should we be responding to frequent heat waves and the impacts of climate change?\nYouth Justice – This year will be a critical time for youth justice reform in WA. The campaign to Raise the Age is gaining momentum and national attention\, recent crime responses and ongoing & emerging issues highlight the urgent need for policy reform.\n\nThis is a free event for members\, but is open for anyone to join. This year WACOSS will be hosting the event entirely online via zoom due to the potential for COVID-19 restrictions to still be in place.
