DESCRIPTION:The WA State Budget will be handed down on Thursday 9 May 2024 and WACOSS will once again be offering a briefing on what the implications are for them\, the broader sector and the community. \n \nThe WACOSS team will be working late into the evening to develop fact sheets and detailed analysis on how the State Budget will impact the community services sector and vulnerable people in our community; the people we all represent and advocate for. \nWACOSS Leader of Policy and Research\, Chris Twomey\, and Senior Policy Officer\, Emily Hull\, will present this analysis on Friday 10 May from 1:30pm via Zoom.  \nJoining them will be special guests from WA State Treasury who will provide a summary presentation of the State Budget in areas relevant to the community service sector after which they will be invited to participate in a conversation with the community services sector in the issues that matter to you. \nThis is a free event for members\, but is open for anyone to join. \nFor non-members who wish to attend there will be a cost of $40 per person. Become a WACOSS member for as little as $15 per year and get access to critical sector events and news. \nRegister for the event and a link to the Zoom presentation will be shared before the event.

DESCRIPTION:Every organisation has a responsibility to keep children and young people safe. \nThis webinar will focus on National Principle 5 covering practical elements on recruitment\, the role of screening\, employee inductions and ongoing staff support\, and include a range of guest speakers. \nChild safe organisations create cultures where the safety and wellbeing of children and young people is prioritised and actions are taken to identify risks and protect them from harm\, including from sexual abuse. \nThe National Principles for Child Safe Organisations (National Principles) provide a framework to guide organisations in developing child safe cultures and practices\, including the ability to identify risks and take agreed actions to prevent\, respond to and report child abuse. \nThe WA Government is committed to supporting the development of safe organisations for children and young people and is working to develop an independent oversight system that includes monitoring and enforcement of the National Principles. \nJoin us to learn more about “National Principle 5: People working with children and young people are suitable and supported to reflect child safety and wellbeing values in practice”\, and how your organisation can implement key practices.

The toolkit has new and updated content as well as templates that will assist you to write letters to Ministers\, and meeting agendas that will help you nail those key messages when meeting with decision-makers. \nWith advocacy at our core\, WACOSS has a long history of driving change for those experiencing disadvantage and hardship throughout Western Australia. This experience is reflected in this toolkit which will help you create an inclusive\, just and equitable society. \nSpeaking at the webinar will be: \nLucy Morrison\, Advocacy Lead\, to discuss why advocacy is important and introduce the new toolkit. Lucy is the Advocacy Lead at WACOSS with a range of experience in political and community-based campaigns. \nLaurene Coller\, Communications Officer\, to discuss social media applications in advocacy. DESCRIPTION:With record-breaking global temperatures on the rise\, we’re feeling the heat now more than ever. What does this mean for our health? Who is the most vulnerable? And what can be done to help us prepare for\, and mitigate\, high heat? \nJoin the Conservation Council of WA’s Go Beyond Gas movement and the Western Australian Council of Social Service for a discussion of the health and social impacts of climate-fueled high heat and heat waves. We will delve into key concerns around high heat and heat waves and strategic methods of adaptation and mitigation. \nThis will include personal stories from those with lived experience of high heat as well as policy recommendations and initiatives for local government. SUMMARY:Webinar: Applying for funding to reduce disaster risk and prepare for disasters in WA
DESCRIPTION:WACOSS is excited to host this webinar\, in partnership with the State Emergency Management Committee\, to provide an overview of the Disaster Ready Fund. \nThis webinar is intended to encourage applications from the WA Community Service sector by providing a platform to discuss program eligibility\, hear from a recently successful community organisation and provide an opportunity to answer questions from the sector. \nThis round of applications includes additional support from the SEMC in the form of free grant writing advice to applicants to help develop their application\, including with a problem statement and risk assessment. As such\, Whitney Consulting will provide a grant writing overview in this webinar. \nThe Australian Government has established the Disaster Ready Fund (DRF) to provide up to $200 million per financial year\, over five years from 1 July 2023 ($1 billion in total). \nIt will fund projects that build resilience to\, prepare for\, or reduce the risk of\, future natural hazard impacts. It will also help to build the long-term sustainability of communities at risk of being affected by future disasters. \nDFES is the applicant and lead agency for WA and it is expected that they will consult widely with community groups and local governments in developing applications. \nThe categories of eligible project activity types are Stream One: infrastructure and Stream Two: systemic risk reduction. \nThis will be online\, and links to access the webinar will be emailed prior to the event.

DESCRIPTION:Women in Focus Webinar Series\nWebinar 2: Women’s Economic Security\nDespite high levels of education\, women in Western Australia continue to face barriers to workforce participation\, a highly gendered labour market and widespread undervaluing of care work. This inequity has far reaching impacts\, and can lead to entrenched disadvantaged\, financial insecurity and poverty. \nThis webinar provides a space to discuss women’s economic security\, including the economic value of feminised work\, the gender wage gap\, employment structures\, new approaches to measuring productivity\, and the disproportionate impact increased cost-of-living has on women. During the webinar you will hear from three leading thinking in this space\, including: \nMelinda Cilento\nMelinda is a company director\, economist and experienced senior executive. She is currently CEO of the Committee for Economic Development of Australia (CEDA)\, is a Non-Executive Director of Australian Unity and Co-Chair of Reconciliation Australia. Melinda is also a member of the Parliamentary Budget Office panel of expert advisors. \nAssociate Professor Astghik Mavisakalyan\nAstghik is an Associate Professor of Economics at the Bankwest Curtin Economics Centre at Curtin University. Astghik’s research has focused on employment\, education\, health\, wellbeing and preference formation\, seeking to understand the role of the family\, institutions\, culture and external shocks in these areas. \nProfessor Alison Preston\nAlison is an Australian economist\, Winthrop Professor of Economics at the University of Western Australia. She is an expert on wage determination and wages policy\, the gender pay gap and segmentation and labour market structures. \nEach speaker will provide an overview of their work before joining a panel discussion based on the question: What is the role of the community service sector in supporting women’s economic security and increasing women’s social and economic participation? Workshop attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions and join the discussion. \n  \nThis webinar will be hosted by Rachel Siewert\, Deputy CEO at the Western Australian Council of Social Service.

DESCRIPTION:Women in Focus Webinar Series\nWebinar 1: Supporting Young Women to Thrive\nFor many young women in WA\, life circumstances such as poverty\, trauma\, lack of services or unmet needs\, lead to poor social\, economic and health outcomes. These outcomes can have far reaching impacts and may lead to entrenched disadvantage. \nThe community service sector play a significant role in developing positive social determinants that enable young women and act as protective factors against the ongoing impacts of social and public health issues\, such as gender-based violence\, racism\, discrimination\, inequality\, poverty and social exclusion. Importantly\, these protective factors also support young women to live empowered\, happy\, safe\, and secure lives. \nThis webinar provides a space to discuss how we enhance work to support and enable young women in WA\, through investment in positive social determinants that support positive life outcomes. During the webinar you will hear from three innovative programs working with young women\, including: \n\nBrave Foundation – an Australian not-for-profit that equips expecting and parenting young people with resources\, referral\, and education opportunities to facilitate happy\, healthy\, and skilled families over time.\nShooting Stars – an initiative of Glass Jar Australia which empowers Aboriginal girls and women across Western and South Australia to make informed choices about their education and employment journey\, helping them shoot for the stars.\nSexual Health Quarters – The HERS Project – (Hura\, Empowered\, Resilient\, Sisters) program is a peer-education program for young women aged 16-29 years from migrant and refugee backgrounds\, that builds knowledge\, confidence and skills in sexual rights\, consent and respectful relationships\, and sexual health.\n\nA representative from each program will provide an overview of their work and share learnings about supporting young women to build supportive and nurturing environments. Representatives will then join a panel discussion based on the question: How can the community service sector support young women through investment in positive social determinants that prevent poor social\, economic and health outcomes\, and promote positive ones?  Webinar attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions and join the discussion. \nThis webinar will be hosted by Alison Evans\, CEO of the Centre for Women’s Safety and Wellbeing.

DESCRIPTION:Navigating disruption\, crisis\, and conflict are normal challenges in community organisations. Things go awry\, from time to time\, with people\, relationships\, and whole group dynamics. It doesn’t make it any easier or less painful\, however\, to know you are not the first person or organisation to come across a difficult individual or experience a schism. \nMegan and Kath have both researched these hard to manage—and hard on people—conflict situations\, which may include rifts between factions in an organisation; exclusion\, bullying and incivility; “sticky situations” with volunteers; power plays; or perceived threats to an organisation’s identity or future existence. \nThis webinar will be a chance to be introduced to their research\, ask questions\, and perhaps reframe a seemingly stuck situation—from the present or the past—or to strengthen your organisation’s capacity to manage the inevitable incidence of conflict in the future. \nThis webinar will be hosted by Dr Megan Paull and Dr Katherine Sugars from Murdoch University. \n

SUMMARY:Webinar: Applying for funding to reduce disaster risk and prepare for disasters in Western Australia
DESCRIPTION:We are excited to host this webinar\, in partnership with the State Emergency Management Committee and the National Emergency Management Agency\, to provide an overview of the National Disaster Risk Reduction Program and the Disaster Ready Australia Fund. \nThis webinar will help give an understanding of both programs and encourage applications from the WA Community Service Organisations and Local Governments. \nBoth agencies will discuss program eligibility and provide the opportunity for the sector to ask questions. The webinar will include a short presentation from recently successful NDRR application from the community sector. \nJoining the webinar will be Disaster Risk Reduction and Disability Advocate\, Clare Gibellini\, who will provide a short presentation on emergency management planning and disability inclusion. \nDisaster Ready Fund (DRF)\nThe Australian Government has established the Disaster Ready Fund (DRF) to provide up to $200 million per financial year\, over five years from 1 July 2023 ($1 billion in total). \nIt will fund projects that build resilience to\, prepare for\, or reduce the risk of\, future natural hazard impacts\, and help to build the long-term sustainability of communities at risk of being affected by future disasters. \nDFES is the applicant and lead agency for WA and it is expected that they will consult widely with community groups and local governments in developing applications. \nThe categories of eligible project activity types are Stream One: infrastructure and Stream Two: systemic risk reduction. \nNational Disaster Risk Reduction\nThe National Disaster Risk Reduction (NDRR) grant program will make about $2.5 million available in 2023 for projects that reduce disaster risk in Western Australia. Projects must contribute to achieving the objectives of the National Disaster Risk Reduction Framework (NDRRF) and the WA Implementation Plan for the NDRRF by reducing risks associated with at least one natural hazard. To be eligible\, projects must reduce disaster risk and improve community resilience\, rather than contributing to disaster relief\, response or recovery activities. \nOrganisation that are eligible to apply for NDRR grants are: \n\nLocal governments\nState government agencies\nGovernment trading entities\nIncorporated organisations\nNot-for-profit organisations.\n\nWebinar Details\nDate: Wednesday 8 March 2023\nTime: 10:00am – 11:30am \nThis webinar will be held online via Zoom. DESCRIPTION:The WA State Budget will be handed down on Thursday 12 May 2022 and WACOSS will once again be offering a briefing to our members on what the implications are for them\, the broader sector and the community. \nThe WACOSS team will be working late into the night to develop fact sheets and detailed analysis on how the State Budget will impact the community services sector and vulnerable people in our community; the people we all represent and advocate for. \nWACOSS Leader of Policy and Research\, Chris Twomey\, and Senior Policy Officer\, Eva Perroni\, will present this analysis on Friday 13 May from 2:00pm  via Zoom.  \nJoining them will be special guests from WA State Treasury\, Michael Andrews and Alistair Jones\, who will provide a summary presentation of the State Budget in areas relevant to the community service sector after which they will be invited to participate in a conversation with the community services sector in the issues that matter to you. \nThis is a free event for members\, but is open for anyone to join. This year WACOSS will be hosting the event entirely online via zoom due to the potential for COVID-19 restrictions to still be in place. Details on how to join the zoom call will be made available to all who register closer to the date. \nFor non-members who wish to attend there will be a cost of $45 per person.
