SUMMARY:Child Safe Recruitment and Staff Support Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Every organisation has a responsibility to keep children and young people safe. \nThis webinar will focus on National Principle 5 covering practical elements on recruitment\, the role of screening\, employee inductions and ongoing staff support\, and include a range of guest speakers. \nChild safe organisations create cultures where the safety and wellbeing of children and young people is prioritised and actions are taken to identify risks and protect them from harm\, including from sexual abuse. \nThe National Principles for Child Safe Organisations (National Principles) provide a framework to guide organisations in developing child safe cultures and practices\, including the ability to identify risks and take agreed actions to prevent\, respond to and report child abuse. \nThe WA Government is committed to supporting the development of safe organisations for children and young people and is working to develop an independent oversight system that includes monitoring and enforcement of the National Principles. \nJoin us to learn more about “National Principle 5: People working with children and young people are suitable and supported to reflect child safety and wellbeing values in practice”\, and how your organisation can implement key practices.

SUMMARY:Feeling the Heat: Stories and Strategies for Western Australia's Rising Temperatures
DESCRIPTION:With record-breaking global temperatures on the rise\, we’re feeling the heat now more than ever. What does this mean for our health? Who is the most vulnerable? And what can be done to help us prepare for\, and mitigate\, high heat? \nJoin the Conservation Council of WA’s Go Beyond Gas movement and the Western Australian Council of Social Service for a discussion of the health and social impacts of climate-fueled high heat and heat waves. We will delve into key concerns around high heat and heat waves and strategic methods of adaptation and mitigation. \nThis will include personal stories from those with lived experience of high heat as well as policy recommendations and initiatives for local government. Of course\, we can’t talk about the heat we’re feeling without addressing what’s fuelling it. We’ll be providing resources and next steps to address the climate crisis too. \nOur panel will feature representative speakers from Doctors for the Environment Australia and the Bureau of Meteorology\, alongside a lived experience advocate. \nThe panel will be followed by a Q&A\, where you’ll have the opportunity to ask questions about preparing for – and turning down – the heat. \nIn the face of significant challenges\, this will be a hopeful dialogue centered on solutions. Come and join us for this conversation.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Supporting Young Women to Thrive
DESCRIPTION:Women in Focus Webinar Series\nWebinar 1: Supporting Young Women to Thrive\nFor many young women in WA\, life circumstances such as poverty\, trauma\, lack of services or unmet needs\, lead to poor social\, economic and health outcomes. These outcomes can have far reaching impacts and may lead to entrenched disadvantage. \nThe community service sector play a significant role in developing positive social determinants that enable young women and act as protective factors against the ongoing impacts of social and public health issues\, such as gender-based violence\, racism\, discrimination\, inequality\, poverty and social exclusion. Importantly\, these protective factors also support young women to live empowered\, happy\, safe\, and secure lives. \nThis webinar provides a space to discuss how we enhance work to support and enable young women in WA\, through investment in positive social determinants that support positive life outcomes. During the webinar you will hear from three innovative programs working with young women\, including: \n\nBrave Foundation – an Australian not-for-profit that equips expecting and parenting young people with resources\, referral\, and education opportunities to facilitate happy\, healthy\, and skilled families over time.\nShooting Stars – an initiative of Glass Jar Australia which empowers Aboriginal girls and women across Western and South Australia to make informed choices about their education and employment journey\, helping them shoot for the stars.\nSexual Health Quarters – The HERS Project – (Hura\, Empowered\, Resilient\, Sisters) program is a peer-education program for young women aged 16-29 years from migrant and refugee backgrounds\, that builds knowledge\, confidence and skills in sexual rights\, consent and respectful relationships\, and sexual health.\n\nA representative from each program will provide an overview of their work and share learnings about supporting young women to build supportive and nurturing environments. Representatives will then join a panel discussion based on the question: How can the community service sector support young women through investment in positive social determinants that prevent poor social\, economic and health outcomes\, and promote positive ones?  Webinar attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions and join the discussion. \nThis webinar will be hosted by Alison Evans\, CEO of the Centre for Women’s Safety and Wellbeing.

This is a significant conversation to have\, in light of the Referendum that will be held this year\, and the positive impact it can have in the lives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. \nWith guest speakers: \n\nJenny Sala\, Executive Manager of Business Development\, Aboriginal Health Council of Western Australia\nKlaudia Shenton\, Policy and Strategy Manager\, Aboriginal Health Council of Western Australia\nCheryl Smith\, Assistant Director General of Aboriginal Outcomes at the Department of Communities WA\n\nLabour market and workforce trends\, challenges and opportunities: Supporting workers facing disadvantage and building community sector capacity\nUnemployment is at historically low levels and community sector organisations face particular difficulties in recruiting staff\, notably in regional areas. At the same time there are many groups in the community who face barriers to work. This presentation considers current and future labour market and workforce trends and issues\, focusing especially on addressing barriers for people who are excluded from jobs. \nWith guest speaker Dr Fiona Macdonald\, Policy Director\, Industrial and Social\, Centre for Future Work \nCollaboration: How does working together affect workforce wellbeing\nWe know collaboration helps social services address the complex needs they see in their clients\, but could it also be the key to looking after the people delivering these services? This session will share the findings of Health Justice Australia’s involvement in the Global Burnout Survey and explore their implications for the design and delivery of services that look after their workforce as well as the communities they support. \nWith guest speaker Dr Tessa Boyd-Cain\, Founding CEO\, Health Justice Australia \nLived experience of a politically extremist world from the Trans perspective\nIn 2023\, political extremism is becoming more and more an issue in Australian society. The rise of hate speech and bigotry is affecting Western Australians and changing our political landscape. \nWith guest speakers Dylan Green\, Lived Experience Advocate \nDylan Green is a WACOSS employee and a passionate advocate for the LGBTQIA+ community. Dylan is a transman raised in Perth who has presented on a number of panels for various organisations and Government Departments and has represented the trans community on consumer reference groups for the WA State Government. \nThe extremist landscape in 2023 – emerging challenges and considerations\nThis brief will outline three emerging and intensifying trends relating to issues of extremism within contemporary Australian society impacting social cohesion and safety for minority groups: the increasing impact of transnational networks; ‘Salad Bar’ ideology; and the growing role of influencer ecosystems. \nWith special guest speaker Dr Ben Rich\, Co-director\, Curtain Extremism Research Network (CERN)\, Senior Lecturer\, International Relations and History\, Curtin University \n  \nPlease note\, this webinar will be recorded.

SUMMARY:Northam Conversation
DESCRIPTION:The Western Australian Council of Social Service invites you to our State Budget Submission community conversation. Each year WACOSS makes a Submission to the WA Government outlining priorities for public investment for people and communities who experience vulnerability and disadvantage\, highlighting emerging issues\, priorities of frontline community services and investment in community services. \nIn his first press conference after being elected Premier\, Roger Cook stated ‘the measure of any society is the way it treats its most disadvantaged and defenceless.’ WACOSS sees this as a big opportunity for our advocacy. Now is the time to bring the issues of the day to the new Cook Government\, to highlight the key issues including escalating cost-of-living and housing availability crisis and advocate for real change. \nWACOSS is seeking input on your key priorities and views to inform our State Budget Submission. \nThis conversation will be convened by Rachel Siewert\, Deputy CEO\, and Ashleigh Gregory\, Community Relief and Resilience Coordinator. It is free to attend and open to all NFP and NGO community and social service providers working in Northam and the surrounding region.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Communities will have conflict. How can we lessen the pain?
DESCRIPTION:Navigating disruption\, crisis\, and conflict are normal challenges in community organisations. Things go awry\, from time to time\, with people\, relationships\, and whole group dynamics. It doesn’t make it any easier or less painful\, however\, to know you are not the first person or organisation to come across a difficult individual or experience a schism. \nMegan and Kath have both researched these hard to manage—and hard on people—conflict situations\, which may include rifts between factions in an organisation; exclusion\, bullying and incivility; “sticky situations” with volunteers; power plays; or perceived threats to an organisation’s identity or future existence. \nThis webinar will be a chance to be introduced to their research\, ask questions\, and perhaps reframe a seemingly stuck situation—from the present or the past—or to strengthen your organisation’s capacity to manage the inevitable incidence of conflict in the future. \nThis webinar will be hosted by Dr Megan Paull and Dr Katherine Sugars from Murdoch University. \n

SUMMARY:Kalgoorlie and Esperance Conversation (Online)
\nThis conversation will be convened by Rachel Siewert\, Deputy CEO\, and Emily Hull\, Senior Policy & Project Officer. It is free to attend and open to all NFP and NGO community and social service providers working in Kalgoorlie\, Esperance and the surrounding region. \nThis Conversation will be convened online.
